Medaram a tiny village in warangal will be filled with people in the forest area to celebrate Medaram jathara or sammakka saralamma jathara from Feburary 17th 2016 to Feburary 20th 2016 medaram jathara in deep forest and far from hustle and bustle of area in warangal , Medaram jathara the abode of Sammakka and Saralamma jatara underwent a huge metamorphosis with ever increasing footfall of devotees from all over india and abroad . The biennial jatara, said to be the biggest tribal carnival on the globe, which has seen people coming on foot, bullock carts and buses, is now grown more in popularity with chopper services also at their doorsteps now telangana government is providing helicopter service also from begumpet .

In 1966, the state-owned RTC first introduced bus services to the tribal fiesta from Warangal district, Karimnagar and Khammam with a fleet of little over 100 buses to jathara. Now, the administration is running more than 3,600 buses from all corners of the Telangana state, besides the special trains run by the SouthCentral Railways to Warangal. But the moot point is that the region has lost huge tracts of greenery around deities’ gaddelu (raised platforms) consequently hitting the livelihood of quite a few forest-dwellers in the area.

With number of devotees growing from thousands to lakhs to the jathara since the jatara came under the purview of Endowments Department in 1968 it went under endownment department  the locals are deprived of their land and crop income every year. During jatara, their land was used to provide amenities to the devotees but people in medaram is losing their livelihood. The locals moved the High Court seeking compensation from the government in combined andhrapradesh too about their livelihood at the jatara time. Despite the opposition from the locals, the authorities turned the temple precincts into a concrete establishment like the shrines in urban areas and government took over under endownment department temple.

Since the government recognized the jatara as the State festival in 1996 government is making arrangements a compound wall around the temple of sammakka sarakka along with iron grills around gaddelu  of sammakka gadde was constructed at that period. Now this year as this is the first time jatara is going to be celebrated by goverment of telanagana and the first time after formation of telangana the authorities laid granite slabs inside the temple compound area . aiming the development of the area government authorities have forgotten the importance of both the fig trees under which the altars of Sammakka and Saralamma were offered mokkulu every jathara time .

Actually With one tree already gone by now the other one is ready to die due to the concrete structures around the sanctum sanctum and the huge quantities of jaggery placed around the altars its about to die. Siddaboina Lakshman Rao the priest at the medaram jathara 2016 one of the jatara’s priest said The culture and tradition of Adivasis is in danger due to the interference of the politics in the jatara administration and the goverment involvement . The locals were completely ignored despite several representations to the government to make it mandatory to run the jatara only by the Adivasis and reduce the role of non-tribals as its a tribal festival and cores of people are expected the culture should not be spoiled

For many non-tribal people, this is like going to picnic. They come drink and enjoy and that is only meaning the Jatara carries to them which is actually not so,” Prof. A. Sitaram Naik said.

Medaram Sammakka Saralamma Jatara or Sammaka Sarakka Jathara History

Actually There are many Stories told about the miraculous powers of sammakka saralamma jampanna and the Medaram jathara. As according to a tribal story which is about 6-7 centuries ago it is told that is in 13th century some tribal leaders with there team who went for a hunting in the forest found a new born girl (Sammakka) in the forest emitting enormous light around her playing amidst with tigers around.

So when the tribal leaders saw it they took Sammakka to their habitation and gave to the head of the tribals. The head of the tribal adopted sammakka and brought up as a chief tain among the tribals and later She later became the saviour of the tribals of the region in and around that area sammakka was married to Pagididda Raju a feudatory tribal chief of Kakatiyas dynasty (who ruled the country of Andhra from Warangal City between 1000 AD and 1380 AD who is famous at that time). She was blessed with 2 daughters and one son namely Saralamma/Sarakka,Nagulamma and son named Jampanna for sammakka

After some years there was a severe drought in the area that lasted for years and as a result the mighty Godavari River dried up and people in the tribal area are not able to pay tax to kakatiyas. the king of Medaram at that time pagedde Raju also didn’t pay tribute to King Pratapa Rudra and Pratapa rudra was angry on it  so In turn king Pratapa rudra sent his army to subdue the tribals and collect the tribute from the tribals as tribals are not able to pay the tribute.  A War was fought between tribal chief pagidde Raju and Kakatiya army on the banks of  Jampanna Vagu which is now called or “Sampenga Vagu” at that time The Koya army fought valiantly but could not with stand the well equipped Kakatiya army as they used all the weapons they have. Though fought valiantly Pagididda Raju the king of tribals and his daughters Saralamma/Sarakka, other daughter Nagulamma, Pagididda Raju Son in law Govinda Raju husband of Saralamma/Sarakka lost their lives in the battle with the kakatiya army . Later Jampanna son of Sammakka died  in Sampenga Vagu  which is now renamed as Jampanna Vagu in the memory of his heroic fight against well trained Kakatiya army at the war between tribals and kakatiya army

When Sammakka hearing this news about the heroic deaths of Jampanna son of Sammakka Sammakka also entered the war and fought and caused lot of damage to kakatiya army though they were well equiped with weapons. Kakatiya army Surprised by her Bravery And Valour the Kakatiya Prime Minister visited war ravaged Koya kingdom with proposal of peace and offered Sammakka a place in the emperor’s harem as the chief queen of their kingdom .Samakka turned down the offer and resolved to continue the fight to avenge the deaths of thir tribes the battle continued and Sammakka was seriously wounded by kakatiya army. So lastly with the wounds Samakka told her people tribes that as long as they remembered her she would protect them. Sammakka then cursed the Kaktiya dynasty to perish And with that wounded body proceeded towards Chilakala gutta and disappeared in the forest near by medaram.

After the war and the disapperence of Samakka the grieving Koyas searched for their queen sammakka all the forest and they found a red ochre box a container of vermilion her bangles and the pug marks of a huge full grown tigress at exactly the same place where she was found as a infant by the koyas leaders when they gave to the tribal leader. With the curse of Sammakka the Kakatiya dynasty came to an end from then the Koyas and the tribals and many other Indian tribes and castes have been holding festivals in memory of Sammakka and Sarakka regularly as Medaram jathara or Sammakka Saralamma Jathara or Sammakka Sarakka jathara .

After sometime, there was a severe drought that lasted for years and as a result the mighty Godavari River dried up. pagedde Raju didn't pay tribute to King Pratapa Rudra. In turn king Pratapa rudra sent his army to subdue the tribals and collect the tribute. Then a War was fought between tribal chief pagidde Raju and Kakatiya army on the banks of "Sampenga Vagu" (Jampanna Vagu). The Koya army fought valiantly but could not with stand the well equipped Kakatiya army. Though fought valiantly Pagididda Raju, his daughters Sarakka, Nagulamma, son in law Govinda Raju lost (husband of Sarakka) lives in the battle. Later Jampanna also dies in Sampenga Vagu (after renamed as Jampanna Vagu in the memory of his heroic fight against well trained Kakatiya army). .

Upon hearing this news Sammakka also enters war and fights and causes lot of damage to kakatiya army. Surprised by her Bravery And Valour the Kakatiya Prime Minister visited war ravaged Koya kingdom with proposal of peace and offered Sammakka a place in the emperor’s harem as the chief queen. Samakka turned down the offer and resolved to continue the fight to avenge the dead. The battle continued and Sammakka was seriously wounded . Samakka told her people that as long as they remembered her, she would protect them. Then, she cursed the Kaktiya dynasty to perish And with that wounded body proceeded towards Chilakala gutta and disappeared in the forest. The grieving Koyas searched for their queen all they found were a red ochre box(a container of vermilion), her bangles … and the pug marks of a huge full grown tigress, exactly the same place where she was found as a infant by the koyas. The Kakatiya dynasty came to an end very soon. Since then the Koyas, Waddaras and other Indian tribes and castes have been holding festivals in memory of Sammakka and Sarakka regularly .

Many a pilgrim pay their promises made to goddess during the Jatra, by offering Jaggery, calfs, coconuts and donations in cash etc. Pilgrims take bathe in Jampanna stream to get purified and absolve from sins.
On the special day - Maghasudha pournami
The actual festival begins in the month of Magha, on Sudha Pournami (full moon day) evening when Sarakka (in the form of a vermilion) would be traditionally brought from Kanneboyinapalle, a neibhouring village in the forest, and placed on a gadde, an earthen platform raised under a tree.

By next sunset, the main goddess Sammakka (in the form of a vermilion) will be brought from Chilukalagutta. There are two gaddes (platforms) Separately one for goddess "Sammakka" and other for goddess "Sarakka". They are represented by bamboo sticks smeared with turmeric and vermilion (Pasupu and Kunkuma). Since time immemorial, there is a huge tree standing on Sammakka gadde.

When the priests bring out the ochre box and other relics from a hidden forest location, there is great tumult with frenzied beating of drums, blowing of trumpets and full throated yells. It is said that during the festival a huge tiger prowls around peacefully. Offerings are coconuts and jaggery. They are piled at the foot of the trees.

Jampanna vagu is a tributary to River Godavari. According to the history, Jampanna is the tribal warrior and the son of Tribal Goddess Sammakka. The Jampanna vagu took his name as he died in a battle fighting against Kakatiyan Army in that stream .The Jampanna vagu is still red in colour marked with the blood of Jampanna (Scientifically the red colour of the water is attributed to the soil composition). Tribal's believe that taking a holy dip in the red water of Jampanna Vagu reminds them the sacrifice of their gods who save them and also induces courage into their souls. There is a bridge constructed on top of Jampanna Vagu, known as Jampanna Vagu bridge.
